A video has been circulating lately showing a small green sticker on grocery store apples and avocados, warning shoppers to look out for it. If you’ve seen it, you probably have questions. If you haven’t, here’s the short version. That sticker points to the Apeel produce coating.
What’s Actually in the Apeel Produce Coating
The sticker belongs to a produce coating made by Apeel Sciences, the company behind the Apeel brand. It’s a thin, edible layer sprayed onto fresh fruits and vegetables, including some labeled organic, to slow spoilage and keep produce looking fresh longer on the shelf. Apeel Sciences has backing from some well known names in food and health investment, which is part of why it’s gotten attention online.
The coating itself contains mostly mono- and diglycerides extracted from grape seed oil, and the FDA classifies it as generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Like a lot of newer food technology, it has also drawn real concern. Many people would rather not eat something sprayed on at a processing facility, something they can’t wash off, no matter how it’s classified. That instinct, to want to know exactly what touched your food and why, is one we understand completely. It’s the same instinct that built this bakery.
Why It Has Nothing to Do With Our Cookies
Here’s the thing though: none of this actually touches what we do. Apeel Sciences makes a produce coating. It has nothing to do with lactation cookies, and it never will. We don’t use it, sell produce, or coat anything we bake in something you can’t identify by name.
What Actually Goes Into a Honey’s Cookie
We make every effort to source organic ingredients, and when that is not possible, we select the highest quality alternative available. Every ingredient in every batch is something we can name, explain, and stand behind. That includes the fenugreek we toast ourselves and the flour we choose recipe by recipe. Nothing sprayed on. Nothing you can’t wash off, because there’s nothing there to wash off in the first place.
Why We Don’t Need a Coating
We’re a small cottage food operation, not a mega-supplier managing shelf life across a national supply chain. We don’t need a coating to keep our cookies looking fresh for three weeks after they leave our kitchen. We bake in small batches and get them to you quickly, the old-fashioned way.
